Poem #1 Poetry is…

April is National Poetry Month. There are so many ways to celebrate this special time! I am going to celebrate by blogging every day. In my daily blog, I will include an original poem, a favorite poem, or instructions on how you can write your own poem. My hope is that you blog everyday with me, but that isn’t a requirement. Everyone will be required to blog once a week.

For my first day of blogging, I want to share my first favorite poem with you. Emily Dickinson  and her poetry touched my heart at an early age. My first favorite poem is here:

I held a Jewel in my fingers —
And went to sleep —
The day was warm, and winds were prosy —
I said “‘Twill keep” —

I woke — and chid my honest fingers,
The Gem was gone —
And now, an Amethyst remembrance
Is all I own —

These words brought me comfort during a sad time. I loved the idea of an amethyst remembrance…so valuable. And the feeling of being outside on a warm day and falling asleep…that conjures feelings of peace! Do you have a favorite poem? What’s your favorite?

Poetry makes me feel so many things. So, today to start…I’m going to begin a list poem about poetry. (This is a first and incomplete draft.) Feel free to add lines to this poem in the comments.

Poetry

emotions pouring out like maple syrup

connecting who I am with the “who I am” of others

luring laughter, giggles, tears, and desperation

sharing deep secrets through metaphor, imagery,  hyperbole…so the secret remains

painting on the page with ink and words

Can you add a line (or more) here to complete the poem?

Taking you to a place only dreamers dare to dream,
A way to let go of reality,
    From heartbreaks to joy,
    A world like no other,
Where you can finally conquer whatever dares to stand in your way to love and happiness,
Anything and everything is real in your mind,
But now it can be real in other minds,
You can show them your love, your wisdom, your world,
By just looking at a piece of paper,
Grab a pen and start writing,
Grab your ideas and start thinking,
    Let your world engulf you.
    💕😛
I hope you like it Ms. Haseltine! I did not get a chance to blog this morning. I just came back from the movies with Kiara.🎥We watched Oz the Great and Powerful. It was really good but REALLY creepy too. And there was an annoying girl who was about 8 who sat behind me and kept kicking my seat and laughing! I was about to scream at her! Not to mention these boys who sat in front of us kept texting the whole time!📱Well anyway, why isn’t everyone commenting? Oh well, bye Ms. Haseltine! 😋

A journey into a world known only by authors and readers
Thoughts pouring out onto a piece of paper,
Turning into lines, then words, then phrases
    A special form of writing
Unique–no two poems are the same
Turning your reality into the reality of others as well
    Emotions, emotions, emotions
    Writing figuratively about literal things
A way to inspire yourself and others
Sometimes just random words, but always full of meaning

Yes, MS! I have shared it with the class already. I’m glad you remembered.

I don’t really have a favorite poem, because I think each poem is beautiful in its own way.

By the way, isn’t that a poem we read in class? It seems really familiar, and I don’t read that many poems.

This is my favorite line: Where you can finally conquer whatever dares to stand in your way to love and happiness. WOW!! Thanks for sharing!

Falling into the word of creativity
All types of literature falling on paper like leaves
Something out of the blue but very heartwarming
    Something very unique
    Like no other
Sharing the gift of happiness, joy, love, saddness
    Letting out emotions
    Emotions, feelings

I hope you like what I wrote. It wasn’t the best writing but I tried my best!

I am really sad today Ms. Haseltine. We sold our house in Columbus. I know I should be rejoicing and be happy that this “burden” has been lifted from us but…is it wrong for me to love that burden? I know it is just a building but what is “just a building” to you is my home to me. That was the last string that tied me to Ohio. I know I will still have my friends and family there but I feel like that is an important landmark in my life. I know there is money but is it enough to bring back all the happy memories? I remember how I was so lucky and took it all for granted thinking that I have all the time in the world, but when really, there was only a sliver of sand left. I wasted all that time being greedy and not knowing how it would all change in a heartbeat. I hope the new owners are nice and take care of that house. That beautiful home will always be in my heart.😥💞

Paravi, I’m so sorry you are sad. It’s ok to feel sad and mourn that loss. (It sounds like you have a poem in these thoughts!) Try one. It might help you with those feelings.
