The Choka Challenge!
We have been challenged by Mrs. Simon’s class to write a poem for National Day on Writing. Here’s the challenge:
Write a choka.
What is a choka?
A double haiku of 5,7,5,5,7,5 syllables or 5,7,7,5,7,7 syllable count.
My dog Bella had her first session with an amazing trainer this weekend and that’s how I thought of this poem…
No. No. Shhh! No bark…
the trainer tells me to say
But don’t say her name.
Bella. Oh, Bella.
Oh what a good girl you are.
At last, she listens.
So happy you took the challenge. This is like the dog whisperer who always knows exactly what to say and what not to say. I have heard that you should only use the dog’s name as a reward. Thanks for writing a choka today. I have one more group coming in soon. I hope they take both the choka and comment challenge.
I hope you do a good choka! Thanks for accepting!
I like the consideration that you are showing for your dog. I wrote a choka two. Here it is:
Sweet, sweet sugarcane
Scented within the cool breeze
Soon boiled to sweetness
Slimy when it’s diced
Sweet when eaten or consumed
Say “Hi ya sugar!”

That is a cute dog.
I love your dog. That is a beautiful dog. I really love your choka. I like the line, Bella Oh Bella. I love that line. Anyway, GREAT CHOKA!

Thanks for your perfect post! I saw perfect because we are just starting to work on Poetry in our classroom in New Zealand and we are just starting to look at Haikus. As I have slightly older children in my room then it would be more of a challenge for a Choka.
Are they an actual form of Japanese Poetry like a Haiku or are they something extra that someone has created?
